About the Wisdom-Seeking Series
Welcome to the final episode of our Wisdom-Seeking Series, a fortnightly set of 90min workshops for experienced GPs to explore the complicated questions in general practice and mental health care. These fortnightly workshops will run on Monday evenings, beginning at 7:30pm (Sydney time).
Each “episode” will start with 30 minutes of a podcast-style conversation between A/Prof Louise Stone and a guest expert. The remaining 30-60 minutes will involve a group exploration of the topics raised, co-facilitated by the episode hosts. Here, the meat of the discussion will come from you: the participants.
These workshops are not Balint groups, nor case discussions, nor clinical supervision. They are something different altogether. The topics are broad, giving participants a chance to share cases without being focussed on a single case. The format of these episodes is designed to promote mutual curiosity and reflexivity, and to help each other develop more nuanced understandings of our role in managing the mental health of our patients.
About Episode 12: Recovery from Trauma
This week’s episode will discuss recovery from trauma. When we experience devastating events, how do we, as doctors and humans, pick up the pieces?
This week’s episode will be co-facilitated by Dr. Madhu Tamilasaran. Madhu is a rural GP and GP supervisor who works and lives in Lithgow – a country town in Central West NSW. She now loves being part of the small community but vividly remembers her initial discomfort at the loss of anonymity and extended scope of practice having moved from the UK’s second largest city as a newly minted GP!
Along with practice ownership and clinical general practice, Madhu’s work time includes medical education and corporate governance as a director of GPSA and NBMPHN.
In addition to her GP supervisor role she mentors medical students, GP registrars and newer GP fellows. She believes that sharing stories is fundamental to surviving and thriving in our work.
She lives surrounded by the bush with her wife, cat, dog and a large stable of bicycles!
In December 2019 bushfire ripped through her small community – again! She will be sharing some stories of what helped her to deal with the aftermath of the crisis as well as what helps her manage the more general vicarious trauma we take on in our line of work
