Episode 1B: Transcultural Understandings of Mental Wellbeing and Meaning (with A/Prof Katrina Anderson)

About the Wisdom-Seeking Series

Welcome to the inaugural episode of our Wisdom-Seeking Series, a fortnightly set of 90min workshops for experienced GPs to explore the complicated questions in general practice and mental health care. These fortnightly workshops will run on Monday evenings (for the Eastern states) and Wednesday mornings (for the Western states).

Spearheaded by A/Prof Louise Stone, each “episode” will be co-facilitated by a guest expert. However, the real meat of the discussion will come from you: the participants. These workshops are not Balint groups, nor case discussions, nor clinical supervision. They are something different altogether. The topics are broad, giving participants a chance to share cases without being focussed on a single case. The format of these episodes is designed to promote mutual curiosity and reflexivity, and to help each other develop more nuanced understandings of our role in managing the mental health of our patients.

About Episode 1B: Transcultural sites of meaning and wellbeing (with A/Prof Katrina Anderson)

This week’s episode will discuss transcultural considerations in mental health care. How do we think about mental illness? How do we get our heads around cross-cultural presentations? What does “evidence-based” even mean in such circumstances?

Both episode 1A (Monday evening) and 1B (Wednesday morning) will be co-facilitated by A/Prof Katrina Anderson. Her perspective, informed by her current clinical work in refugee and asylum seeker health, her interest in mental health and counselling, and her passion for patient-centred medicine (particularly regarding improving health outcomes for vulnerable and disadvantaged patients) will provide a valuable richness in these discussions, and we are honoured to draw on her extensive experience in medical education to facilitate this experimental format of workshop.
